Mars still Retrograde, Mercury enters Capricorn

Mars turned retrograde last November 15 (retrograde: the apparent backwards motion of a planet due to our Earth being in a concentric orbit with the other planet). Mars resumes normal, direct motion, on January 30. Mars, the planet of Action, Aggression, Combat, Beginnings, etc., is considered very Malific when it is in retrograde motion. In the USA chart, Mars is now approaching the natal position of the USA Mars, and promises more problems with 'partner countries' as well as problems within those countries, through January.
The grouping of planets in Sagittarius is now spreading out, with Mercury leaving that sign and moving into Capricorn, on Friday, January 4. Capricorn is a much more practical sign than Sagittarius. The significations of Mercury become more stable in realistic Capricorn. Media hysteria and business transactions calm down a bit with Mercury in the 2nd house of the USA chart.
On the night of January 3, the time of the Iowa Caucus voting, both Mercury and the Moon will be changing signs: Moon will be moving from Libra to Scorpio, and Mercury moving from Sagittarius to Capricorn. Since both of these significators represent the Mind in Vedic Astrology (Moon= instinctual mind, Mercury= rational intellect), people have trouble making up their minds right at the time of the voting. The outcome will remain uncertain up to the last minute, but due to the placement of the Moon relative to the natal Moon positions of the front-runners, it looks like John Edwards will come out better than most are expecting. Winter Solstice, Venus enters Scorpio

Saturday, December 22, is the Winter Solstice. This date marks the apparent limit of the Sun's movement to the southerly horizon, as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.
Starting on the Winter Solstice, the days begin to get longer again. On this day, the Sun enters 0 degrees Capricorn in the Tropical Zodiac used by Western Astrologers, although its actual position in the Heavens is 6 degrees Sagittarius (for more informatioin on the Tropical Zodiac read Comparison Article of Western and Vedic Astrology). Although it is an important time and connected to various celebratioins in all traditional cultures, the Solstice doesn't have much significance in Vedic Astrology.
Tuesday, December 25, Venus enters Scorpio. After spending nearly four weeks in its own sign Libra, Venus starts its transit through Mars' sign Scorpio. This results in some combining of the energies and significations of lovely Venus, with the planet of Action and Combat, Mars. The result is Passion, and some selfishness, and potential for Arguement. Mars is a "natural malific" in Vedic Astrology, and Scorpio is the sign of Secrets. Thus some of the negative qualities of Venus get brought out, such as secret affairs.
In the USA chart, Scorpio is the sign in the 12th house. This part of a chart is concerned with Hidden Activities. Scorpio is also the sign of Investigations. Thus we can expect some steamy news of sexual misconduct in the coming weeks. Other significations of Venus, such as Finances, and the Entertainment Business, can similarly suffer during this transit.

Saturn goes Retrograde, Full Moon in Gemini

The coming two weeks, starting Dec.16, there is a pile-up of planets in Sagittarius. Sagittarian energy predominates: the desire for Truth, Justice, and Independence. Opposite to the Sagittarius stellium is Mars, retrograde (traveling backwards) in Gemini. Mars is called the 'crooked planet' in Vedic Astrology. In cerebral Gemini it gives negative patterns of Deceit and Deception. Thus we see on the campaign trail the presidential hopefuls trying to project honesty and strait talk (Sagittarius Sun, Jupiter, Mercury), but being betrayed by their past actions (Mars as the Planet of Actions, retrograde means "going back over").
Saturn enters its retrograde phase on Dec.19. The planet of structure, obligation, focus, restrictions, and suffering will be retracing its recent passage in the Heavens for the next 5 months. A planet is retrograde only when it is at its closest to the Earth, therefore bright and powerful, but not manifesting in the 'normal' manner. I call Saturn "the Reality Check planet" ...i.e., more harsh reality in store for the coming months, especially as applied to governments, as Saturn is retrograde in the sign Leo, sign of the King.
Full Moon this month will be next Sunday, Dec.23, at 7 degrees Gemini. This Full Moon will be within a degree of Mars and exactly opposite to Jupiter in Sagittarius. It also lines up with the Rising Degree of the USA chart. The Moon is the "Seconds Hand of the Cosmic Clock", and a Full Moon is especially strong, creating a powerful potential for events during next weekend. In your own Vedic Astrology birth chart, if you have planets or a sensitive point in early Sagittarius or Gemini, there is likewise a strong potential for an event. In any case, it is likely to be an intensely emotional weekend.

Jupiter conjunct Pluto, Sun, Mercury enter Sagittarius

Monday, December 10, Jupiter and Pluto are conjunct in the Heavens in Sagittarius. ALthough Pluto is not one of the original Vedic Astrology Planets (they couldn't see it back then) modern astrologers make use of the significations of Pluto. This planet's transformative energy when applied to the significations of Jupiter results in the potential for changes in Justice and Law, Material Prosperity, Religion and Morality, etc. This energy pattern continues from Jupiter's entry into Sagittarius last November, through to December of 2008.
Sunday, Dec.16, Sun and Mercury will enter Sidereal Sagittarius, adding their energy to Jupiter, and Pluto, already transiting in Sagittarius. Thus the Sagittarian qualities of upholding Truth and Justice are much reinforced over the coming weeks. Opposite to these planets, Mars, still retrograde (moving backwards amongst the stars) in Gemini, continues to provide potential conflict with Jupiter's need for Honesty. Mars retrograde is the Planet of Actions going back over the Past. Thus Jupiter searches for Truth by bringing up Past Actions.
In the chart of the USA, the congregation of planets in Sagittarius occurs in the 1st house, the "sense of self." The intensification of self awareness gets played out in the ongoing debates amongst the presidential candidates as appeals to the Identity of the Nation.

New Moon in Scorpio, Mars Retrograde for Finances

The New Moon this month will be Sunday, December 9, at 23 degrees Scorpio in the Sidereal Zodiac. This is the lunar month called Margshirish, named after the lunar sign (nakshatra) called Mrigrashira, in which the Full Moon will occur Dec.23. This Lunar Month is considered good for starting things, but since the planet of Starting Things, Mars, is currently retrograde, it is adverse to try to take advantage of the month's energy. Other aspects of the Mrigrashira, such as indulging in pleasureable activities, are not contraindicated.
In the chart of the USA, retrograde Mars is going to 'back over' the natal positions of Jupiter and Venus over the next two weeks. Both of these planets are related to the Finances of the Country. More specifically, Jupiter is Banking, and Venus is the Value of the Currency. As both of these areas have been suffering lately, it may come as no surprise that there is more bad news on the way. Mars as the Planet of Actions, going backwards amongst the stars, suggests going back over past actions, or shall we say "payback time?"
